McDonald’s worker arrested after telling company president she can’t afford shoes.
"A woman who has been employed by the McDonald’s Corporation for over 10 years says she was arrested last week after she confronted the company president at a meeting and told him she couldn’t afford to buy shoes or food for her children.
Nancy Salgado, 26, told The Real News that she felt like she had to speak out during McDonald’s USA President Jeff Stratton’s speech at the Union League Club of Chicago on Friday for the sake of her children.
“It’s really hard for me to feed my two kids and struggle day to day,” she shouted as Stratton was speaking. “Do you think this is fair, that I have to be making $8.25 when I’ve worked for McDonald’s for ten years?”
“I’ve been there for forty years,” Stratton replied from the podium.
“The thing is that I need a raise. But you’re not helping your employees. How is this possible?” Salgado asked.
At that point, someone approached Salgado and informed her that she was going to be arrested.
She later recalled the encounter to The Real News’ Jessica Desvarieux.
“The strength was very powerful, like, just remembering the face of my kids, like I say, you know, just simple things like I can’t provide a pair of shoes like everybody else does, sometimes every month, or anything like that,” she said. “And he needs to know we are what all the employees at McDonald’s are going through. We’re struggling day to day to provide our needs in our houses, things for our kids. And it’s just–it gets harder and harder with just the poverty wage they have us living in.”
“They just told me, you know, well, you’re being under arrest because you just interrupted, you trespassed the property. You’re just going to go to jail,” Salgado added. “And what I remember just telling them, ‘well, like, so, because I have to speak out my mind and I had to tell the president the poverty wage I’m living in, that’s just against the law?’ You know, just be able to speak up your mind and say, you know what, I can’t survive with $8.25? It’s just — it’s ridiculous that I’m going to get arrested. You know.”
Salgado, who is still working at McDonald’s, said she had her hours cut following the arrest and feared further retaliation.
“The CEOs make millions and billions a year and why can’t they provide enough for their employees?” she wondered.”
I think that this is beyond awful for many reasons. People can’t afford to live off of the wages that they are given currently, and can’t even speak out against it. I know tumblr is great for spreading important news like this, so please help me get the word out to support this woman.
IM FUCKING CACKLING LMG

I dunno if this belongs here, but I really wanted to talk about it.
When they announced the creation of a Hellblazer TV show my initial reaction was that of heart-wrenching and chill inducing dread. Because I remembered the Keanu Reeves movie. But then, they started to show off stuff. They actually got a British actor, a blond one at that. They couldn’t get him to smoke, but they fought hard for it, which was understandable given it’s network US TV but a bit disappointing. The fact they even fought for it filled me with hope that they actually got the character and would treat him right. The trailers came and filled me with hype. I even started rereading my comics in excitement. An excitement that ran fever pitch when they announced Zed. They had won me over. I was sure I’d finally see one of my favorite comic book characters get the representation they deserved.
Then I saw a quote that immediately took all that excitement, beat it over the head with a shovel, force it into a dufflebag, and tossed it into an ice cold harbor to drown.
Executive Producer Daniel Cerone said “In those comic books, John Constantine aged in real time,” before continuing with “Within this time of three decades [of comics] there might have been one or two issues where he’s seen getting out of bed with a man. So [maybe] 20 years from now? But there are no immediate plans.” Essentially stating that his sexuality, which has been kinda a thing since issue #5 was unimportant, if not invisible just because he wasn’t boning a man every issue. One of the few healthy bisexual characters I can even name in all of media had been “Straight-washed” for lack of a better term.
His attitude was typical of prejudice that it all to common to bi community and it made me very angry. If he’s saying that “his sexuality isn’t important, so we wrote him straight.” That’s indicative of a very harmful mindset of assuming straight is default and normal. One that I’ve had so engraved in me as a person I still find myself still struggling with. If he’s saying that he’s “Not really bi. I mean he only did it like, twice.” He’s not only ignoring the characters history where he hints at a lot more than twice but saying that we don’t exist. A thing that the bi community as a whole fights with regularly. If he’s just saying Middle America can’t handle it or isn’t ready for it that’s all the more reason to actually go through with it. Visibility is the first key to acceptance. And Middle American loves Glee as soul-searingly awful that show and it’s representation is.
I signed a stupid petition to try and change this. It probably won’t change anything, but a risk not taken is an opportunity lost. I’d love for any of you to do the same. I don’t only want Constantine to be represented. I want to be represented.
I think that’s both cute and hilarious
The caption gives me the feeling you’re not the artist of this. Where did this come from so they can have credit? (to tetris3984)

Audrey says “fuck your gender roles”
This movie is super underrated.
Audrey is so underrated. How can you not love her?
I have a love-hate relationship with this movie.
On one hand it’s got awesome PoC characters who defy racial and gender stereotypes. It also discusses colonialism and how people tend to destroy indigenous cultures to obtain land and resources (which is why the crew ultimately decided a to pretend they never found Atlantis because they don’t want anyone else to try and destroy the culture).
But on the other hand, the whole plot is that Atlantis needs a white, cishet man to save it from extinction and for some reason he understand their culture and language better than they do.
hEY FUCK YOU OKAY
MILO WAS THE ANTITHESIS OF WHITE SAVIOR
HE WAS A NERDY USELESS LITTLE SHIT WHO WAS COWARDLY UNTIL OTHERS FORCED HIM TO ACT
HIS ONLY STRENGTHS WERE HIS MIND AND HIS ETHICS
HE WAS THE PERFECT DUDE FOR THE JOB AND THE REASON HE KNEW BETTER WAS BECAUSE HE RIGOROUSLY STUDIED TEXTS THAT HAD BEEN LOST OR DESTROYED IN ATLANTIS BECAUSE KIDA’S FATHER INTENTIONALLY LET HIS KINGDOM LAPSE INTO DECAY AND OBSCURITY
DO NOT PULL THAT WHITE SAVIOUR BULLSHIT BECAUSE MILO WAS A DAMN GOOD DUDE
Milo didn’t save them Kida did, Milo stopped his own people from doing wrong!

You pissed about it?
Me too. So instead of just whining about it let’s do something about it.
